The International Bomber Command Centre is a world-class facility to serve as a point for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for the men and women from 62 different nations who came together in Bomber Command during WWII. These brave men and women were united in their efforts to protect the freedom we all enjoy today. The service included Aircrew, Ground Crew, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, Auxiliary Air Transport, Auxiliary Transport Services, NAAFI and many many others.
Lincoln was chosen as the ideal home of commemoration of the bravery of the men and women of Bomber Command site as it provides a central point for all 27 bases that earned Lincolnshire the title of ‘Bomber County’. Lincoln’s Cathedral provided a landmark for crews both leaving and returning from missions and, for those who failed to return, the Cathedral was often their last image of home.
Discover the Bomber Command Centre
The centre includes a spacious historical exhibition, library, and research facilities. Outside the main building there is the Peace Garden and the Memorial Spire, made of corten steel. The dimensions of the Spire correspond to the dimensions of the wings of Avro Lancaster bomber – the principal combat aircraft used by the Bomber Command. The Spire is surrounded by walls listing the names of nearly 60,000 airmen who died during the bombing campaign, a poignant testimony to the price paid by those who fought in the skies over Europe.
The International Bomber Command Centre is great for people of all ages including families, it is educational and fun, allowing both children and adults to learn through experiencing the exhibition galleries with their interactive displays and exhibits, the Peace Gardens and the Memorial.
